As I sit and write this entré article, excited to present this website to the world, the Chicago Winter chill is upon me. Today in Chicago, it didn’t quite reach 40 degrees and the wind was in full force. I was able to bundle up and venture out to take a few photos, come home, put the heat on and eat some food.
I thought about how I could introduce my photography passion to the world and give something back to the community. The same community that inspired me to take so many photos and share them with my friends and family.
There are approximately 140,000 homeless individuals in Chicago. Less than half are able to take shelter in one of the metropolitan facilities that allow them to have a roof over their heads and some food for a night. The rest unfortunately go without shelter, heat or food. This is a staggering number when you consider that temperatures in Winter range from 30 degrees to sometimes well below zero.
How to help fight hunger and homelessness
In some small way, we can each do our part. We can donate money, clothes, leftover food. Sometimes it can be as simple as stopping to talk to someone we see that we know is perhaps lonely and looking for a little conversation so they don’t feel completely forgotten.
In the spirit of the holiday season, I’d like to do my part. From all Crossing Delaware sales for the month of December 2015, I will donate at least 20% of all proceeds to homeless shelters around Chicago to help fight hunger and homelessness. I am grateful to have my health, my family and my friends as well as the roof over my head and food on my table.
