New Efforts to Help Fight Chicago’s Hunger Problem

March 7, 2016 by Jessica Rosengard

Amid positive changes, Chicago still suffers from a hunger problem.

March brings many changes for many Chicagoans. The hopes for warmer weather, knowing Spring is around the corner despite the occasional snowfall that continues to visit and the inevitable dyeing of the Chicago River a much brighter shade of Green in celebration of St. Patrick’s day.

But despite the plans Chicagoan’s have for the upcoming celebrations and warmer days, there is still a problem that surrounds us every day. Homelessness and hunger.

How long will we have a hunger problem?

I wrote about this in November in a post called “Photos to Fight Hunger in Chicago”:

There are approximately 140,000 homeless individuals in Chicago. Less than half are able to take shelter in one of the metropolitan facilities that allow them to have a roof over their heads and some food for a night. The rest unfortunately go without shelter, heat or food. This is a staggering number when you consider that temperatures in Winter range from 30 degrees to sometimes well below zero.

Year after year, Chicago’s homeless population continues to suffer and too many people go without food and shelter. It is dismissive to say there is no end because there is an answer, but it will take a collective effort to make the problem diminish. Providing whatever help we can is the best place to start.

So what Now? How can I help?

Although the weather might be getting less harsh and bitter so the majority of us, it is still cold for too many that go without food and shelter. Thus, in line with efforts fresh starts and thoughts of upcoming warmer weather and as I re-launch the Crossing Delaware website, I am relaunching the effort to donate 20% of all proceeds from Crossing Delaware sales to Chicago area homeless shelters and food pantries for the months of March and April 2016 to help fight homelessness and hunger in Chicago.

These proceeds will come from sales from any Crossing Delaware printed photos, framed prints, canvas wrapped prints, aluminum metal prints, etc. Everything will help to increase the donation amount to local homeless shelters, food pantries, and other potential services that work tirelessly to aid the individuals seeking shelter, food and a future.
